What’s on your sunny day wish list?

Our sunny days are the moments that bring us joy. You may be looking forward to an exotic holiday or a new home. Or there may be smaller things you want to tick off your life’s dream list, like seeing your favourite band or some live sport.

At Coventry Building Society, we think savings shouldn’t just be for the essentials. They should also help you have unforgettable experiences. That’s why we’ve looked at the latest savings trends to see how UK savers are prioritising their sunny day moments.

The biggest savings trends right now

According to our Sunny Days Savings Index, over half (56%) of over 50s in the UK have big plans for their savings1. And they’re dedicated to saving! A recent Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) survey found that 72% of adults over 55 have at least one savings account, and 41% add money to it every month2.

Tighter purse strings

We know saving can be difficult. In fact, 34% of adults aged 50-69 said everyday costs going up has made it harder to put money aside3. But tech could be helping give savings a boost. We’re all getting a little more tech savvy, and we know people are starting to use apps to keep on top of their savings and help them budget.

Big savings goals

We also found out that 21% of over 50s want to save between £10,000 and £20,000 over the next five years1. And they plan to use around 20% of this money to tick things off their bucket list.

So, what are we saving for?

It might not surprise you that travel is top of most people’s list! Around 29% of over 50s are planning trips to North America or Europe. And they want to travel in style, with 25% hoping to fly first class1.

Over 50s also want to support their family, with around 10% are saving for their child’s wedding and 4% hoping to help with house deposits1.

Looking after the home is important too, with lots of people saving to add new modern luxuries and comforts as well as technology to their living spaces4
