About the scheme

In response to the evolving humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, the UK government has created a scheme to house refugees in the UK. The Homes for Ukraine scheme aims to connect Ukrainians who need to flee from their homes as a result of the war with families and organisations in the UK. These families and organisations will offer them accommodation for at least six months.
Of course, we support this. As a lender, we want to make it as straightforward as possible for homeowners who have a mortgage with us to volunteer to house refugees, if they want to and are able. We’re working closely with UK Finance and the Building Societies Association (BSA) as the details of the scheme are announced and any potential impact on our customers are worked through.

Before signing up

We all want to help, but this scheme may not be suitable for everyone and there are a few things you should think about.

Check the points below

Your budget
You’ll need to continue to pay your mortgage, so if your family budget is already squeezed or you have any financial difficulty, we ask that you think carefully before applying for this scheme. You can refer to the Money Helper website for free and impartial money guidance.

Arrangements you want to make
The government suggests it’s best to set a few clear expectations between you and your guests and so as a sponsor you should draw up an agreement with your guests that sets a few ground rules – please read the government’s Guidance for Sponsors for more information.

You have the right insurance
Make sure your home insurance will cover you as a sponsor, as this is a requirement of your mortgage. Read the Association of British Insurers’ statement for more details.

It’s genuine
Fraudsters love a crisis and are exploiting the current situation to trick people. It's important you remain vigilant and guard against criminals who may use the publicity around Homes for Ukraine to target you.

After you've registered

If you’re planning to take part in the Homes for Ukraine scheme and you’re in touch with an applicant (or applicants) from Ukraine who have had their visa approved, please let us know.

Where to find more information

You'll find more information in the Frequently Asked Questions section on the government website. There are also dedicated sections for both people who want to be a sponsor and for councils where sponsors live.

This information is regularly updated by the Government.

How we're helping

In the meantime, we’ve also made a £5,000 donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal and we’ve opened an account to provide a way for members and colleagues to donate too. Through this, we’ve sent more than £15,000 to the DEC in the first week.

We’ve also ring-fenced £50,000 to support refugees as they arrive in our home city of Coventry. Our partner charities will help us understand the best way to do this.
